Iaroslav Musinschi breaks course record

PRESS RELEASE: METRO GROUP MARATHON DUESSELDORF:

Iaroslav Musinschi breaks course record and
establishes European lead in Duesseldorf

Iaroslav Musinschi took the 8th edition of the METRO Group Duesseldorf Marathon with a great course record of 2:08:32. The 33 year-old Moldavian also established a European season’s lead. Additionally he is the first European marathon runner this year to clock a sub 2:10 time. Russia’s Natalya Volgina won the women’s race with 2:30:47. Adding all running events a record number of 13,000 athletes had entered the METRO Group Duesseldorf Marathon. Among them were 4,200 marathon runners.

In the men’s race Iaroslav Musinschi ran his own pace right from the start. Guided by a pacemaker he reached the half way mark in 64:04 minutes and then almost kept his pace. Musinschi was more than three and a half minutes ahead of Andrej Toptun (Ukraine/2:12:08) and Pawel Ochal (Poland/2:13:23). Germany’s Falk Cierpinski came in fourth with 2:17:18.

In the women’s race Mehtap Sizmaz had been well ahead early in the race. But the runner from Turkey got problems and finally dropped out of the race. Natalya Volgina had taken the lead after around 25 k. She reached the finish almost one minute ahead of Volha Salevich (Belarus/2:31:41) and Svetlana Semova (Russis/2:33:01). Melanie Kraus (Germany) was fourth with 2:36:00.

Irina Mikitenko: World-class times possible in Duesseldorf

Spectators were caught by surprise and gave a huge applause when suddenly Irina Mikitenko stepped out of the bus that had brought the elite runners to the start of the METRO Group Marathon Duesseldorf on Sunday morning. Germany’s marathon queen had been invited to the race as a guest of honour by the organisers. But the 37 year-old, who had won the World Marathon Majors (WMM) Series in 2008 and 2009, was not satisfied with just starting the youth races and holding the finishing tapes. Instead she decided to join in and run. “I have come here. So I want to give it a test and see what it is like to run in Duesseldorf,” said Irina Mikitenko.

Organisers had reacted quickly and given the German marathon record holder (2:19:19) bib number 1! Of course Irina Mikitenko did not run seriously. She jogged the first 10 k one week after a muscle problem in her left leg had forced the defending champion to drop out of the London Marathon. “It was fun and quite a different marathon experience,” said Irina Mikitenko, who got into a car after running and then was driven to various points of the course watching the elite race and supporting the runners.

Asked about her impressions of the METRO Group Marathon Duesseldorf Irina Mikitenko said: “It is an interesting and flat course. The fact that Iaroslav Musinschi was able to run 2:08:32 more or less on his own shows that the course must really be very fast. Otherwise such a result would not have been possible for him. I think that world-class runners could do very well here and I believe that one day a winner in Duesseldorf will finish in 2:06 – provided it is possible for the organisers to sign a strong field.”

Irina Mikitenko’s next goal will be the 10,000 m final at the European Championships in Barcelona in summer. After this she plans to run an autumn marathon. The next METRO Group Düsseldorf Marathon will be staged on 8th May 2011.
